2021 Cadillac XT4 Review, Specs, and Pricing With no shortage of choices in the small-luxury SUV marketplace, the Cadillac XT4 will appeal to buyers who value a sharp-edged design, a spacious interior, and a traditionally upright, SUV-like driving position. All models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and either front- or all-wheel drive. The cabin has a modern appearance with plenty of standard and optional technology and infotainment features, but overall refinement isn't quite on the same level as the XT4's key rivals, which includes the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class. If you overlook its down-market interior materials, the XT4 remains a practical and stylish option in this popular segment. What's New for 2021? Cadillac has made only a few minor changes to the XT4 for 2021, starting with the base Luxury trim level, which receives a new standard power rear liftgate and the option of leather upholstery. An optional Driver Awareness package that includes automatic high-beam headlamps and lane-keeping assist has also been added to the Luxury trim. The Sport trim receives red-painted brake calipers, and both it and the Premium Luxury model come with new exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals. Two new colors join the available palette: Infrared Tint coat and Wave Metallic. The Premium Luxury and Sport models both cost almost the same, but since the former doesn't live up to its name, and the latter is even better to drive, we'd recommend the XT4 Sport. It has unique wheel designs, blacked-out exterior trim, and exclusive interior accents. The Sport model also has an exclusive active suspension with adaptive dampers and better bolstered front seats. To that we'd add the Comfort and Convenience package (leather interior, ventilated and massaging front seats, etc.) and choose the Active Sport suspension (adaptive dampers) to avoid the ride quality reducing 20-inch wheels that are required with the Sport Dynamics package. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Under the hood of all XT4s is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 237 horsepower. It pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. The 2019 XT4 Sport we tested sashayed its way to 60 mph in a lackluster 7.8 seconds—1.5 seconds behind the X1. Despite the difference, the XT4 felt spry around town and when merging onto the highway. Ignore Cadillac's assertion of sportiness with the XT4. It's more of a boulevard cruiser than a sports car. The ride is okay, so long as the road is relatively smooth. The steering is similarly disappointing and is neither feel some nor direct in its action. The XT4's only decisive controls are its brakes, which hauled our test car down from 70 mph in our emergency stopping test in 172 feet with one of the firmest brake pedals we've encountered. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG Despite its fuel-saving cylinder shut off capability, the XT4 earns wholly average EPA fuel economy estimates, with front-wheel-drive variants reaching 30 mpg on the highway. In our real-world highway fuel economy test, our all-wheel-drive test vehicle managed just 27 of its EPA-rated 29 mpg. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Space The XT4's interior, while comfortable and spacious, isn't as high-class as we expect in this premium segment. The dashboard and upper door panels are covered in a stitched, faux-leather wrap, but lower on the doors and center console, cheaper, sharp-edged plastic persists. The buttons and switches look and feel as though they're likely to be shared with less expensive offerings in the General Motors portfolio. As with its passenger compartment, the XT4's cargo room is spacious. Behind the XT4's rear seat we fit six of our carry-on suitcases, and with the seatbacks folded flat, we managed to fit 18—slightly more than smaller rivals such as the Mini Cooper Countryman. If you're looking for a small SUV that can haul cargo like a larger one, the Volvo XC40—which held 23 carry-on suitcases—is worth a look. Infotainment and Connectivity All XT4 models come with an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Cadillac's CUE software. The touchscreen looks nice and crisp and is tucked slightly into the dashboard. The interface is reasonably easy to use, too, and in addition to touching the screen, the user can also interact via a console mounted knob. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and a seven-speaker audio system are all standard; navigation is optional, as is a 13-speaker Bose audio system. Selecting the available Technology package (Premium Luxury and Sport models only) adds a digital gauge cluster, a head-up display, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Safety and Driver Assistance Features The XT4 has earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn't completed its battery of testing. Cadillac does offer it with a plethora of driver assistance features, but few of them are standard fare. 2023 Cadillac Lyriq Overview Cadillac's first entrant into the luxury electric vehicle market will be the Lyriq SUV, previewed by a concept car with sharp styling and a modern cabin. Cadillac says that both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive models will be offered, and that its new SUV will have a driving range of more than 300 miles. The Lyriq has been designed from the ground up and will ride on General Motors's new scalable battery architecture; the company claims a low center of gravity and a spacious cabin as benefits of the dedicated EV-architecture. The Lyriq should be on sale sometime in late 2022 as a 2023 model. What's New for 2023? Not only is Lyriq a brand-new nameplate for the struggling American luxury brand, it's also Cadillac's first all-electric offering. When it goes on sale, it'll go head to head with heavy hitters such as the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and Tesla Model X. Pricing and Which One to Buy Cadillac hasn't said exactly how much the Lyriq's will cost or if it will follow the brand's usual trim-level arrangement. However, we expect it start at just under $60,000, which is a requirement to be eligible for state incentives in California and New York. Get Pre-Approved Get Today's Specials Value Your Trade Engine, Transmission, and Performance The Lyriq will come standard in rear-wheel drive form with an electric motor on the rear axle; all-wheel drive will be optional and adds a second motor at the front to drive those wheels. Cadillac has been mum on details about the Lyriq's electric powertrain so far, so we don't know how much horsepower it will make. Either way, acceleration is sure to be brisk, at least at lower speeds, thanks to the immediate nature of an electric motor's power delivery. The I-Pace, for example, leapt to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds during our testing; we expect the Lyriq to provide similar performance. Range, Charging, and Battery Life General Motors is launching a line of new EV battery technology with the Lyriq called Ultium. The scalable technology allows the automaker to produce batteries that range in size from 50.0 kWh to 200 kWh, although the largest size is said to be reserved only for large EV pickup trucks such as the upcoming GMC Hummer EV SUT. Cadillac claims that the Lyriq will offer a battery with about 100-kWh worth of capacity and should be capable of driving ranges of more than 300 miles per charge. DC fast charging capability will be standard but the Lyriq will also be able to charge on home power outlets as well. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG So far there's been no word from the EPA on the Lyriq's estimated fuel economy (as expressed in MPGe), but we expect that to become available closer to the SUV's on-sale date. We'll also have the opportunity to put the Lyriq through our 200-mile highway fuel economy test in the future, and when we do we'll update this story with results. Get Pre-Approved Get Today's Specials Value Your Trade Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The Lyriq concept vehicle shows a spacious interior with just four seats and a center console that divides the two front and two rear seats, with a touchscreen for the rear seat passengers. We're not sure how much of that will make it to production, and we expect three-across seating the second row. Cadillac says using the dedicated EV-architecture allows for a more airy and open cabin with plenty of space for passengers to get comfortable. More advanced noise cancellation technology is said to reduce road noise inside the cabin, and the interior designers have incorporated surprises such as backlit speaker grilles and hidden storage cubbies. Infotainment and Connectivity The Lyriq's dashboard, like the new 2021 Escalade's, is dominated by a giant, 33.0-inch curved OLED display that serves as both the SUV's infotainment system and the driver's gauge display. In the Escalade, the infotainment system can be controlled by a click wheel on the center console, a boon for drivers who aren't fond of touchscreens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot are all expected to be standard features when the Lyriq rolls into Cadillac showrooms. A 19-speaker stereo system from the high-end audio experts at AKG will be offered, but it's unclear if it will be a standard or optional feature when the Lyriq reaches the market. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have released crash-test results for the Lyriq. We are expecting Cadillac to endow it with many driver-assistance features, though, and Cadillac says the brand's Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving technology will be offered as well.
