2021 Cadillac CT4 Review, Specs, and Pricing As the sole American offering in a European dominated segment, the 2021 Cadillac CT4 has a lot to prove. Luckily, its sharp styling matches its playful driving demeanor, and the CT4 serves as a desirable entry-level Caddy that doesn't ignore the wants and needs of enthusiast drivers. Two turbocharged four-cylinder engines are on offer: A 237-hp 2.0-liter comes standard, but we'd recommend the optional 309-hp 2.7-liter mill. Buyers looking for even more performance should hold out for the CT4-V Blackwing (reviewed separately), which debuts for 2021. Unfortunately for Cadillac, the CT4's somewhat down-market cabin doesn't quite hit the same target as entry luxury compact cars such as the BMW 2-series Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz A-class. What's New for 2021? The CT4 enters its second year on the market with a few upgrades, namely a newly optional 12.0-inch digital gauge display and an available Diamond Sky Edition package. The latter adds a lower body kit, Brembo brakes, model specific wheels, an aluminum trimmed center console, and two-tone leather upholstery, among other things. Cadillac has also made previously optional driver assistance features—such as automated emergency braking and pedestrian detection standard and added a Super Cruise semi autonomous driving mode as an option. Moving up from the base Luxury model to the Premium Luxury brings niceties such as genuine leather upholstery and 18-inch wheels. We'd splurge and add the Bose premium audio system, which includes navigation and a 14-speaker stereo system along with a wireless smartphone charging pad. No matter which option packages you choose, do yourself a favor and spec the more powerful turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Buyers can choose between two turbocharged four-cylinder engines: A 237-hp 2.0-liter powers the base Luxury and mid-range Premium Luxury and Sport models, while a 2.7-liter is optional in the Premium Luxury and standard in the CT4-V. It makes 309 horsepower in the former and 325 horses in the latter. The smaller of the two engines is paired to an eight-speed automatic while the larger four gets a 10-speed. Rear-wheel drive is the standard arrangement and rare in this segment. Rivals such as the Audi A3, BMW 2-series Gran Coupe, and Mercedes A-class are all based on front-drive chassis. The CT4 offers all-wheel drive on all models as an option. We've driven the CT4-V and found it to be athletic, eager, and quick, although we would have preferred more refinement from the 10-speed gearbox. Even in this sportiest guise, the Caddy's suspension handles potholes without punishing occupants and delivers sharp, rewarding handling that any car enthusiast can appreciate. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG Both of the CT4's turbocharged four-cylinder engines provide decent fuel economy. Rear-wheel-drive models with the 2.0-liter are rated as high at 23 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. Opting for all-wheel drive drops the highway number by 2 mpg and the combined number by 1. The CT4's key rivals—the Audi A3, the BMW 2-series Gran Coupe, and the Mercedes-Benz A-class—all boast similar fuel economy ratings. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Inside the CT4, Cadillac has wisely switched to a more user-friendly control setup versus the largely touch sensitive interface found on the ATS. Although the interior design and the quality of the materials at first appear attractive, they are ultimately unremarkable. Cabin space is tight for adults, especially in the rear seats, but Cadillac makes several luxury features standard even on the base trim, including 12-way power adjustable front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control. Moving up through the range provides more desirable features, such as leather upholstery, magnesium paddle shifters, ambient interior lighting, and memory settings for the driver's seat and exterior mirrors. Infotainment and Connectivity All CT4s come with an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with the latest CUE software. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces come standard, as does an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. Cadillac offers navigation on all models. It comes bundled with a wireless smartphone charging pad and a 14-speaker Bose stereo system that replaces the car's standard eight-speaker arrangement. Safety and Driver Assistance Features Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have published crash-test results for the CT4. Cadillac offers a host of driver assistance features, but few are offered as standard, a curiosity given mainstream small cars such as the Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3 offer such features gratis. 2021 Cadillac CT5 Pricing, Specs, and Review The 2021 CT5 is Cadillac's sports sedan, a crucial role in any luxury automaker's portfolio. When compared with its rivals—the BMW 3-series, Mercedes-Benz C-class, and Genesis G70—the CT5 doesn't have the sharpest reflexes or the poshest cabin, but its handsome styling helps it stand out from the crowd. A turbocharged four-cylinder comes standard, but buyers can upgrade to a twin-turbo V-6 with up to 360 horsepower. The Caddy's cabin is more spacious than many of its rivals', making it easier to use as a family car. And all models come with touchscreen infotainment, basic driver assistance technologies, and plenty of convenience features. What's New for 2021? Like the smaller CT4, the CT5 receives a new Diamond Sky Metallic Edition package for 2021, which offers unique exterior and interior design elements including distinct wheels. A new 12.0-inch digital gauge display is newly available, and Cadillac will offer its Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving mode as an option on 2021 CT5s. It adds features such as interior ambient lighting, a wireless smartphone charging pad, illuminated exterior door handles, blind-spot monitoring, driver-seat memory settings, rear parking sensors, and power lumbar support for the driver and front-seat passenger. It also unlocks many options, such as the Driver Awareness Plus package. That brings automatic high-beams, lane-keeping assist, a head-up display, and more. We'd recommend it, but you should note that it also requires you select the Lighting package, which consists of front cornering lamps and illuminated doorsills. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The standard engine in the CT5 is a 237-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but you can upgrade to a 335-hp twin turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. The performance oriented CT5-V boasts a 360-hp version of the twin-turbo V-6 as well as adaptive dampers and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. A more track-ready model is also in the works, with a prototype already spotted testing. Both engines pair with a 10-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. In our testing, a rear-drive CT5 with the turbo four-cylinder sauntered to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. The BMW 330i and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti, two of the CT5's key rivals, completed the same test in 5.1 and 4.6 seconds, respectively. When it comes to ride and handling, the CT5 is both more softly sprung and less athletic than the CTS it replaces. Body control is sloppier, and the improvements to the car's ride aren't enough to justify what feels like a step backward in driving dynamics. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA estimates the 2021 CT5 with the standard turbo-four is rated for up to 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The 335-hp V-6 is rated up to 19 mpg city and 28 highway, with the 360-hp version slightly behind at 18 mpg city and up to 27 mpg highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, the rear-drive Sport model managed 31 mpg. Get Pre-Approved Get Today's Specials Value Your Trade Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Cadillac corrected some of the CTS's interior flaws with this new sports sedan; namely, the CT5 provides a more user-friendly interface and straight-forward design. Unfortunately, the quality of the cabin materials seems unworthy of the CT5's positioning as a luxury vehicle. Premium Luxury models are available with a nice open-pore wood trim that elevates the interior design, but it mingles alongside cheap black plastic that could've been lifted from the plebian Chevrolet Malibu family sedan. The rear seat is more spacious than the CTS's, but rivals such as the Acura TLX and the Volvo S60 both feel roomier. All three vehicles have similarly sized trunks, though, and each fit five of our carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats. Infotainment and Connectivity The CT5 features the latest version of the CUE infotainment system, displayed on a 10.0-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. It's much more logically structured than the old system and swaps some of the touch sensitive controls for physical ones. You can control the system via a rotary wheel located behind the shifter or by interacting with the touchscreen itself. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration comes standard. Desirable available features include a head-up display, wireless device charging, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The 2021 CT5 earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA), but it hasn't been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS). A host of driver-assistance technology is available, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. GM's Super Cruise Level 2 autonomous-driving feature—which can manage a vehicle's steering, acceleration, and braking without the driver needing to keep his or her hands on the wheel—will be available sometime after launch. Better warranties are available in the entry-luxury marketplace with the Genesis G70 and Kia Stinger, both of which offer longer limited and powertrain warranties. The Genesis even comes with three full years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, while Cadillac includes only the first visit free of charge.
